Position Description

The Vehicle Fitter is responsible for inspecting, servicing, maintaining and repairing company vehicles, mobile plant and associated equipment to ensure they remain safe, reliable, roadworthy and available for operational use. The role supports the business by completing planned maintenance, responding to defects and breakdowns, preparing vehicles for statutory inspection, and maintaining accurate maintenance records in line with company procedures, manufacturer guidance, DVSA expectations, operator licence requirements, and applicable health, safety and environmental standards.

Specific Tasks

  • Carry out routine servicing, preventative maintenance and safety inspections on vehicles, trailers, mobile plant and ancillary equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and braking system faults using inspection techniques, diagnostic equipment, technical data and sound engineering judgement.
  • Complete repairs, adjustments and component replacements to engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, braking systems, bodies, hydraulics, electrical systems and related equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles and plant for MOT, plating, roadworthiness inspections and other statutory or compliance checks.
  • Receive, investigate and rectify driver-reported defects, operational faults and breakdowns, escalating significant issues to the appropriate manager.
  • Attend on-site or off-site breakdowns where required, supporting recovery or temporary repairs in a safe and controlled manner.

Qualifications

The role requires a practical maintenance background, sound technical judgement and the ability to work safely on a varied fleet in a busy industrial environment.

Specific Skills

  • Recognised motor vehicle, heavy vehicle, plant maintenance, mechanical engineering or equivalent qualification, preferably at Level 3 or equivalent standard.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing commercial vehicles, industrial vehicles, mobile plant, trailers or specialist fleet equipment.
  • Good understanding of vehicle mechanical systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, braking systems and associated safety controls.
  • Ability to diagnose faults methodically and complete effective repairs to a safe, compliant and durable standard.
  • Knowledge of DVSA roadworthiness expectations, operator licence maintenance obligations and workshop documentation requirements.
