Maintenance Assistant
Location: Oxford
Salary: £33,001 per annum
Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 3:30pm
This is an excellent opportunity for a practical, reliable and self-motivated individual with general maintenance experience to join a busy and diverse estate environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the ongoing maintenance, compliance and upkeep of a range of buildings and facilities, ensuring they remain safe, operational and maintained to a high standard.
Reporting to the Maintenance Operations Manager, you will undertake a variety of planned, preventative and reactive maintenance tasks while delivering excellent customer service and maintaining professional standards at all times.
Key Responsibilities
Repairs & Maintenance
- Carry out reactive, planned and preventative maintenance tasks across the estate with minimal supervision.
- Complete regular Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) inspections.
- Conduct water hygiene checks, emergency lighting inspections and fire safety compliance activities.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repairs.
- Undertake minor repairs and building adaptations.
- Assist with the removal, installation and replacement of furniture, fixtures and equipment.
- Work closely with operational teams to ensure accommodation, communal areas and facilities are maintained to a high standard.
- Accurately complete maintenance records and documentation using electronic systems and devices.
General Duties
- Deliver a professional, friendly and customer-focused service.
- Ensure all work is completed safely and in line with Health & Safety legislation, policies and procedures.
- Maintain clean, organised and compliant workshops, stores and maintenance areas.
- Assist with inventory and stock control activities.
- Participate in training and development opportunities as required.
- Provide support for out-of-hours events when necessary.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and support wider operational requirements when needed.
What to Expect
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys variety and takes pride in maintaining facilities to a high standard. Alongside planned maintenance activities, the role will involve practical day-to-day tasks, including:
- Weekly water flushing and water hygiene checks.
- General repairs within occupied buildings.
- Unblocking toilets and clearing drainage issues.
- Responding to emergency maintenance requirements.
- Carrying out statutory compliance and safety inspections.
- Supporting the upkeep of accommodation, public spaces and operational areas.
A flexible approach and willingness to undertake all aspects of maintenance work are essential.
About You
Essential Skills & Experience
- Previous experience in general building, property or facilities maintenance.
- Sound knowledge of building maintenance and building services activities.
- Ability to respond effectively to urgent and emergency maintenance issues.
- Strong practical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Good organisational skills with a methodical approach to work.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- IT literate with experience using computers, tablets or electronic maintenance systems.
- Good understanding of workplace Health & Safety requirements.
- Professional attitude, appearance and conduct.
- Flexible, proactive and willing to take on a broad range of maintenance duties.
Qualifications
- GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent).
- City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2, recognised apprenticeship, or equivalent practical experience within a maintenance-related discipline.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working across multiple building maintenance disciplines.
- Relevant trade qualifications.
- Experience within estates, facilities management, education, hospitality, residential accommodation, conference facilities or similar customer-focused environments.
- Experience undertaking compliance-related inspections and checks.
- Familiarity with maintaining large, multi-building estates.
