Job Title General Horticultural Assistant

Hours Full time, 5 days per week including alternate weekend working with overtime during peak seasonal periods.

Job Purpose

To work closely with the directors and other team members to provide excellent service, advice and information to our customers. Our customers are at the forefront of our business, so the ability to provide good horticultural advice in a positive, professional, calm and friendly manner is essential.

Key responsibilities:

Customer Service - to offer exemplary customer service from enquiry through to after-sale, as required.

Sales - working visibly, proactively and innovatively as a key salesperson in order to maximise sales through effective stock control, displays and other means.

Plant Area Operations - ensuring excellent presentation in all plant areas, undertaking plant care and general maintenance including watering, weeding, planting, potting and pruning.

Health & Safety - ensure safe working practices that are in place are adhered to and report concerns.

Person Specification

Essential Skills, Experiences and Qualifications

*

Experience of working in a customer service environment

*

A proficiency in till (EPOS) and payment operations

*

GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English

*

A strong theoretical and practical horticultural knowledge

*

Experience of plant care and informal training in horticulture

*

A willingness and desire to learn more about horticulture

*

Physical fitness and an ability to lift, plant and dig as required

*

A willingness to work outside regardless of climate

*

A high level of self-motivation is needed with the ability to work independently without supervision but also as part of a team

*

Excellent timekeeping

*

An awareness of the importance of a proactive approach to health and safety

*

A pleasant and pro-active demeanour

*

An ability to work as part of a team or independently

Desirable Skills, Experiences and Qualifications

*

A formal horticultural and/or customer service qualification

*

Health and safety qualifications relating to nursery management (chain sawing, spraying etc)

*

At least 6 months experience of working in a nursery, garden centre or similarly related context
