Market Attendant/ Cleaning Operative

Location: Darwen Market (Daily on‑site attendance required)

Contract Type: Temporary

Hours: 37 hours per week

Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm

Pay Rate: £13.26 per hour

About the Role

We are seeking a reliable and proactive Market Attendant to support the daily operations of Darwen Market. This is a hands‑on role ideal for someone who enjoys working in a public‑facing environment, takes pride in maintaining clean and safe spaces, and can confidently assist traders and visitors throughout the day.

Key Responsibilities

Cleaning & Maintenance

• Clean floors, surfaces, windows, public and trader toilets.
• Operate cleaning machinery, including scrubbing/sweeping machines, high‑pressure washers, and occasionally platform lifts.
• Maintain cleanliness in busy areas such as the Food Court, including clearing tables and routine sweeping/mopping.
• Carry out basic labouring and general upkeep tasks around the market.

Waste Management

• Collect and manage market waste, including use of waste compaction equipment.
• Separate materials for recycling and use relevant lifting/mechanical equipment.

Customer & Trader Support

• Act as a first point of contact for general enquiries from traders and market visitors.
• Provide helpful, professional, and courteous service at all times.

Security & Site Access

• Assist with basic security duties as required.
• Support with unlocking and locking up the market when needed.
• Remain vigilant in situations involving difficult behaviour, helping ensure a safe environment.

General Duties

• Follow established cleaning rotas and sign off completed work.
• Undertake additional tasks as directed to support smooth market operations.
• Participate in required training (e.g., First Aid, Health & Safety, customer care).

Skills & Experience

Essential

• Experience using a range of cleaning equipment.
• Knowledge of Health & Safety, PPE, and COSHH requirements.
• Ability to work at height using provided equipment.
• Strong verbal communication skills.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Team‑oriented but able to work independently when needed.
• A positive, proactive, and customer‑focused approach.
• Reliability and flexibility to support operational needs.

Desirable

• Basic maintenance skills.
• Experience in a public‑facing environment.
• Security awareness or previous exposure to similar duties.
