Workers Enjoy Widespread Salary Hike as Winter Winds Down

Wages are up across the board according to catering, driving, industrial and office recruitment specialists, Blue Arrow. The specialist staffing agency’s latest sector report revealed that average earnings have risen for all four featured sectors compared to the same point last year.

Salaries were particularly hot in the kitchen, as the average earnings for hospitality and catering professionals grew 4.2% from £23,080 to £24,045. Chefs de partie benefited the most, with a 6% rise seeing their salaries jump from £22,889 to £24,261. However, this remains some way off head chefs, who are the best-paid professionals at £32,904, following a 2.5% rise.

In terms of individual earnings, receptionists enjoyed the biggest percentage increase across all sectors. An 8% increase saw their average salary rise from £19,077 to £20,612. Despite a minor drop of 0.8%, PAs remain comfortably the best paid professionals in the call centre, admin and secretarial sector at £27,196. The industry average rise of 0.2%, which saw earnings nudge up to £23,724, was the smallest increase among the four sectors.

It was a positive month for order pickers, whose earnings increased 6.8% to £16,365. This comfortably outstripped the transport and logistics industry average of 1.2%, which took earnings to £24,781. Oddly, class 1 drivers – the highest earners in the sector – were the only ones to see their wages fall. A 2.3% drop took their average salary from £27,049 to £26,416.

Manufacturing and production professionals received a modest average pay increase of 0.7%, with salaries rising from £35,404 to £36,141. The 5% uplift experienced by production operatives was the highest in the sector, taking their earnings from £16,263 to £17,079. Despite a drop of 3.1%, fitters remain the highest paid in the sector at £27,598 – yet welders earn more in Scotland, the East Midlands, North East and Wales.

Focusing on the most sought-after job roles within the hospitality and catering; transport and logistics; manufacturing and production; and call centre, admin and secretarial sectors, Blue Arrow’s unique reports feature salary analysis, job demand levels and average salaries by every UK region.
