We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual with excellent technical and analytical skills to join a Division of the Local Authority as our new Financial Accountant. 

Working as part of our Finance and Procurement team, you will help them deliver effective and efficient finance support by undertaking a range of activities, within the following specialist work areas. Helping to establish processes in our newly formed Treasury Management function, including undertaking day-to-day Treasury Management activities in compliance with the Treasury Management Strategy.

Strategically managing the Treasury Management Function for WECA ensuring maximum returns are derived from cash balances and producing outturn reports (whilst managing risk). The provision of VAT advice and support to other teams at the Local Authority, including assisting and advising on VAT matters, the submission of our VAT returns and for calculating and monitoring our Partial Exemption position.  Acting as a technical accounting lead, assisting the Head of Finance and Management Accountants in the production of the Statement of Accounts, applying relevant accounting standards and undertaking closedown processes and tasks.


Hourly Rate: £20.17

Days: Monday to Friday

Hours: 09.00 - 17.00

Start Date: ASAP

Location: City Centre

Duration: 3 months temporary contract then permanent for the right candidate


Requirements to apply for this role

 

Qualifications and Knowledge

• A recognised Accountancy Qualification (CCAB).

• Detailed knowledge of financial accounting processes and approaches.

• Knowledge or awareness of public sector financial systems, including Accounting Procedures, Risk Management and Financial Regulations.

 

Experience

• At least 2 years post-qualification experience in a business or financial environment.

• Experience of providing financial support in a dynamic and complex organisation.

• Practical experience in the preparation of final accounts.

• Experience of providing regular financial management information/advice to tight deadlines.

• Specific experience and understanding of financial reporting.

• Experience of performing complex reconciliations.

• Experience of delivering high-quality customer service both inside and outside an organisation.

 

Skills and Competencies

• Excellent numeracy skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.

• Knowledge of accounting systems, preferably including Agresso.

• Excellent written and verbal communication and inter-personal skills.

• Excellent organisational and time-management skills with ability to prioritise, multitask and manage a busy workload.

• Proactive with the ability to use initiative and work autonomously without close supervision.

• Substantial knowledge and understanding accounting and financial procedures and the ability to present these so that they are understood.

• Articulate, resilient, flexible and able to work as part of a team and under pressure.

• Focus on excellent customer service with a commitment to continuous improvement.

• High degree of motivation and personal enthusiasm.
