D.T's Story

Where do you currently work and what do you do?

I work at Capita on the document management team.

When did you start working there?

I started at the beginning of January this year (2019)

Tell me about a typical day at work

I start at 8.30 in the morning and collect the box I will be working on. My job is to go through the documents and ensure that they are ready for scanning into the computer system by removing staples and paperclips, unfolding corners and things like that. I get two breaks and a lunch break in the day then I finish at 4.30.

Do you have targets to work to?

In your first week you don’t have any targets at all, so you can just learn the role without any pressure. After that you get told how many boxes you would be expected to achieve in a day, but each department is different, so it can vary. The targets are really easy to hit.

What was your application process like?

I filled out a Blue Arrow application form and registered then I was invited to an interview. It was really quick after that, I was offered the job almost straight away. They carried out the security checks and I was at work in no time at all.

What were you most nervous about before you started?

Definitely the interview, when I was invited for the interview the wording was a bit intimidating, so I think I built it up in my head but when I got there it was like a group interview and not nearly as bad as I thought.

Did you receive any training before you started?

Yes, I had a couple of weeks one-to-one training working alongside someone. After that you training is sort of on-going. If you move between departments, you get the full one-to-one training again each time.

Are you aware of any career progression or self-development options?

We actually had a meeting recently about this, they said that they are watching for the right candidates to be made permanent so we should stick at it and keep doing what we are doing. I have seen a few people achieve a permanent position, so it is possible to get one.

What do you like most about your job?

The hours are good because I have a young family and so working while the children are at school is really good for me. I also really like the people, everyone has been really nice, they treat me the same as they treat all of the permanent staff even though I am agency.

What do you dislike most about your job?

There is nothing I really dislike, I enjoy my work so I suppose it would just be the uncertainty of whether I can eventually get a permanent role or not.

What would you change if you could?

I would like a bit more reassurance about how I am doing, I know I exceed all of the expected targets but it would be nice to hear if I am on the right track.

What are your fellow team members like?

Oh, they are really lovely, everyone checks to see if you are getting on ok. We have office raffles and things too, it is a really inclusive environment.

What are your long-term goals?

Apart from becoming a permanent member of staff I would really love to go into management. There are some team leader positions so getting into one of those would be good.

How do you hope to achieve these goals?

I am just going to stick at it and keep doing my job as well as possible. I always hit my targets, but I am making an effort to ask my managers for more work and responsibility, so they know I am keen to be promoted.

Would you recommend your job to a friend?

Yes, I have already recommended to two people and they have started the process of applying.
